Evolutionary Physiology

Francisco Bozinovic

Full Professor at Departamento de Ecología, P. Universidad Católica de Chile (Chile).

Francisco Bozinovic has recieved a PhD degree in Biological Sciences from the Universidad de Chile (1988) and has occupied a postdoctoral position in the Carnegie Institute Pittsburgh. Bozinovic’s main academic interest is to determine how physiological diversity affects and is affected by the ecological processes. He is also interested in the study of both the macro and microevolutionary patterns and processes by which physiological variation evolve and/or persists. Other of his goal is to determine how animals can exploit environments and how physiological traits are related to fitness and to species or population range of distribution.

The title of Pancho’s lecture will be: The evolution of physiological traits. An introduction

Ernesto Gianoli
Associate  Professor at Departamento de Biología, Universidad de La Serena, Chile

Ernesto Gianoli has recieved a MD degree in Ecology from Universidad de Chile (1996) and a PhD degree in Entomology from Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (1999). He has occupied postdoctoral positions at Universidad de Chile (1999) and Universidad de Concepcion (2002). The main goal of Ernesto’s research is to found functional explanation for ecological patterns. This way, he try to to advance current understanding of the interaction between plants and their environments.

The title of Ernesto’s lecture will be: Short-term evolution of ecophysiological traits in an exotic plant species allows invasion of understory in a temperate rainforest

Carlos Navas
Professor Doutor at Departamento de Fisologia, Universidade de Sao Paulo (Brasil)

Carlos Navas has recieved a MD degree in Etology from Universidad de los Andes de Bogota (1989) and a PhD degree in Ecophysiology from Connecticut University at Storrs (1995). He has occupied a postdoctoral position at Departamento de Fisiologia, Universidade de Sao Paulo (1995).The central questions that are persuit in Navas´ lab are related with behavioural and physiological mechanisms that allow major ecological transitions in the evolutionary history of different clades.

The title of Carlos’ lecture will be: How to colonize a semi-arid environment being a Brazilian anuran

Pablo Sabat
Associate Professor at Departamento de Ciencias Ecológicas, Universidad de Chile (Chile)
Pablo Sabat has recieved a PhD degree in Ecology from Universidad de Chile (1996), and has occupied a postdoctoral position at Departamento de Eclogia, P. Universidad Católica de Chile (1998). The main scientific interest of Pablo is the analysis of physiological and morphological mechanisms that determine the observed distribution patterns in vertebrates.

The title of Pablo’s lecture will be: Osmoregulatiory physiology in passerine birds: evolutionary and phenotypic responses to dietary chemistry along a latitudinal gradient.

Ariovaldo Pereyra Cruz Neto

Professor Doutor at Universidade Estadual Paulista, Campus de Rio Claro. (Brasil)

Neto has recieved a MD degree (1993) and a PhD degree (1998) in Zoologia from from the Universidade Estadual Paulista, and has occupied postdoctoral positions at P. Universidad Católica de Chile (2006) and University of Western Australia (2008). Neto is working in vertebrate zoology, giving special emphasis to questions related with the study of energetic metabolism and water balance.

The title of Neto’s lecture will be: Evolutionary and ecological correlates of energetic and water balance among marsupials

Enrique Caviedes-Vidal

Full Professor at Departamento de Bioquimica y Ciencias Biologicas, Universidad Nacional de San Luis (Argentina)

Enrique Caviedes-Vidal has recieved a PhD degree in Biochimistry from from the Universidad Nacional de San Luis (1992), and has occupied postdoctoral positions in the University of Wisconsin at Madison (1994). Enrique’s major scientific interest is the ecological physiology of birds, and in particular the study of digestive strategies.

The title of Enrique’s lecture will be: The evolution of nutrients absorption among vertebrates
